The Canadian Coast Guard recovered a body from the ocean off Oak Bay on Monday.

The body was found close to Oak Bay Marina and was brought to the docks, where Oak Bay police and the coroner started an investigation.

Oak Bay Police Deputy Chief Const. Kris Rice said the death was not considered suspicious, the body has been identified and next of kin have been notified.

He did not reveal if the deceased was male or female and did not provide an age or any other details about the circumstances around the discovery.

“The body was just outside of the marina, in a different area, but because the marina was right there it was used as a safe place to investigate the deceased,” said Rice.

“Through that investigation, it was determined the death wasn’t suspicious and the death was transitioned to the authority of the B.C. Coroners Service.”

The coast guard said the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre based at CFB Esquimalt co-ordinated the response to the recovery. Oak Bay police were contacted at 11:48 a.m. on Monday.

The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed it was investigating the death. A spokesperson said it was an open investigation and no details would be available at this time.
