The pool in Port Alberni’s Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre will be closed until further notice following a small electrical fire on Tuesday morning.

Port Alberni Fire Department, Cherry Creek Fire Department, Sproat Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Beaver Creek Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the fire near the intersection of Wallace Street and 10th Avenue.

Port Alberni Fire said the fire was out before 8:45 a.m.

The city’s museum and library, which adjoins the rec centre, briefly closed but reopened by 10 a.m.

City crews are assessing the damage and the pool will be closed for repairs, Port Alberni said in a notice.

Echo Aquatic Centre was built in 1967 and costs about $1 million to operate each year.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has been considering building a new centre since 2023.

A report from the district says it expects operating costs to rise “dramatically” as aging parts of the centre need to be repaired and replaced.
