REGINA — School divisions in Saskatchewan now have to make their change room policies publicly available and share them with the provincial government.
In January, the Saskatchewan government said all schools were to have policies in place by June 30 that upheld the privacy, dignity and comfort of all students.
The directive came after Premier Scott Moe, during the fall election campaign, said it would be his “first order of business” to ban “biological boys” from changing with “biological girls.”
He later backtracked his comments, which were in response to a complaint that two transgender students used a girls’ changing room at a school in southeast Saskatchewan.
Most divisions, including Regina Public Schools and Saskatoon Public Schools, already had policies in place when the province issued the directive.
Some groups, such as the Saskatchewan School Boards Association, welcomed the decision, while others like the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation said it opened the door for hate towards LGBTQ+ students.
