CHICAGO (AP) — White Sox first baseman Tim Elko was removed from Friday’s doubleheader opener against Cleveland because of right knee soreness.
It was unclear exactly how Elko got hurt. Miguel Vargas shifted from third to first before the Guardians batted in the fifth, and Colson Montgomery came in to play third.
Elko struck out looking in the first in his only at-bat on a warm, muggy afternoon. The 26-year-old rookie is batting .145 with four homers and eight RBIs in 20 games.
White Sox right-hander Shane Smith struck out five in three innings before he was replaced by Dan Altavilla. Smith allowed two runs and two hits while throwing 46 pitches, 31 for strikes.
There was no word on any health issue with Smith, Chicago’s lone All-Star selection. The rookie is 3-7 with a 4.26 ERA in 18 starts and 86 2/3 innings.
The doubleheader was scheduled after Thursday night’s game was postponed because of rain.
