A suspected explosive device delivered to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment Friday afternoon has been deemed safe, police say.

The RCMP’s Vancouver-based Explosive Disposal Unit was called to the scene shortly after the item was found at around 3 p.m.

Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP media relations officer, said police are trying to determine the origin of the package, which he said arrived at the detachment via Canada Post.

This is the third suspicious box reported to police in B.C. over the past few days, and the second to be located at an RCMP detachment on Vancouver Island.

A package found Thursday morning at the West Shore RCMP detachment in Langford prompted explosive response protocol, and another was reported at Powell River’s Resource Recovery Centre just hours later.

Both were investigated and determined to be props. O’Brien said RCMP are not sure if they’re connected, but called the string of suspected explosives “suspicious.”
