A vehicle incident that occurred near the Tsawwassen B.C. Ferries terminal is causing “major delays” for those on their way to and from Vancouver Island, DriveBC said Saturday afternoon.

The highway is closed between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive because of a crash that happened at around noon on Saturday.

A detour through Tsawwassen is in effect for those on their way to and from the terminal, but DriveBC said delays are still affecting drivers going in both directions.

A statement from B.C. Ferries said customers should be prepared to face “extensive delays” until crash scene is cleared, noting that passengers travelling by public transit and taxi are also affected.

B.C. Ferries said service between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay in Nanaimo can serve as an alternate route between Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.
