One person has been taken into custody after a “security incident” Tuesday at Vancouver International Airport involving a plane from the Victoria Flying Club.

A small private aircraft was observed in the airspace near YVR shortly before 1:30 p.m., resulting in a “temporary ground stop” for all planes arriving at the airport.

Richmond RCMP were called, and once the aircraft landed safely, the lone occupant was taken into custody, according to YVR spokesperson Reena Gacad Kirkpatrick.

The 39-minute ground stop affected nine inbound aircraft that were diverted to alternate airports, she said.

“Airlines, YVR, and our partners are working to support getting those passengers to their destinations,” said Gacad Kirkpatrick.

Victoria International Airport confirmed that the incident involved a plane from the Victoria Flying Club.

“The aircraft has landed and the individual involved has been apprehended by the RCMP,” said a statement from the airport. “We thank the RCMP, NAV CANADA, the Victoria Flying Club, and our on-site teams for their co-ordinated response.”

Social media videos show multiple police vehicles on the tarmac behind a single-engine plane, and several officers advancing on the aircraft.

Flight operations at both airports had returned to normal Tuesday afternoon, but YVR staff said delays are possible.

Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines for the latest updates.
