ST. JOHN’S — Officials have asked residents of Badger, N.L., to flee as an out-of-control wildfire burns nearby.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier John Hogan described the situation as “very serious” at a press conference in St. John’s, N.L.

He said there is rain in the forecast for the area, but it won’t come soon enough to hold off an evacuation order.

Hogan says three waterbombers will be taking shifts to douse the flames, which are burning roughly four kilometres away from the town of about 685 people.

People are asked to head east to Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L., which is about 30 kilometres away by highway.

Wildfires earlier this year destroyed at least 11 homes in the area of Adam’s Cove, N.L., which is about 40 km northwest of St. John’s.
