Why:A month-long series by Paper Street Theatre set on the lawn of Emily Carr House gets underway Friday and Saturday, with the first three of nine performances ofYes and Yesteryear: An Improvised Jane Austenon tap through July 26. In a charming move, each ticket includes complementary lemonade and cucumber sandwiches, but securing seats may soon be difficult, however. This popular series under the direction of improviser and storyteller Dave Morris may have no script but it does very well with audiences, so in the words of Austen herself — make haste.

Why:The always-reliable Fifty Fifty Arts Collective is the curator of this entry the Eventide Music Series, which offers eight uniquely individual instalments through Aug. 20. For the July 16 experimental instalment, The Fifty Fifty has procured the talents of Swedish free jazz saxophonist Mats Gustafasson and conservatory-trained Italian clarinetist Zoe Pia (who perform as Rite), along with local improvisers Cosmic Foam, shoegaze-adjacent indie rockers Death Made Stardust, and multi-instrumentalist and looping specialist faun.a.

Why:Victoria-reared metal act Spiritbox made a July 7 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, so there’s a successful track record where the City of Gardens and metal of the synthesizer-heavy variety is concerned. Which is why there’s high hopes for the impending debut of Born of Osiris, a Chicago prog-metal band. With comparisons to everyone from Coheed and Cambria to Linkin Park, new music from Born of Osiris isn’t the heaviest, but we get so few metal acts of this calibre, this early show — with support from opening acts The Browning, Convictions and ENDR — is at the very least worth a cursory peek.
