Former councillor Herb Haldane back at Sooke Municipal Hall after byelection

He was previously elected as a councillor in 2008.

Herb Haldane is the newest member of the District of Sooke council, according to preliminary results from Saturday’s byelection.

Haldane received 732 votes. Of the six other candidates, Helen Ritts came in close second with 709 votes, and Katherine Strongwind received 432.

The byelection took place because former councillor Dana Lajeunesse was elected the NDP MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat in last fall’s provincial election.

Haldane, a local builder, ran for mayor unsuccessfully in 2014 after serving as a councillor since 2008. His term will last until Sooke’s municipal election in October next year.

In a video posted to his website after results came in, Haldane thanked his community for its support.

“We want to fix up some roads, get some things happening and change this town,” he said.

Haldane’s campaign goals included advocating for property rights, contributing to road infrastructure and reducing property taxes.

The number of valid votes cast for all candidates was 2,071, the district said. A total of 3,358 votes were cast in the 2022 municipal election, about 26 per cent of eligible voters in Sooke at the time.
