One person is dead and another was taken to hospital after a house fire in Cowichan Bay on Thursday afternoon.

Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue Chief Dean Stennes said his department responded about 4 p.m. to the home on Hillbank Road. The Mill Bay Fire Department provided mutual aid, bringing the total deployment to about 18 firefighters.

Stennes said firefighters were at the scene until just after 8 p.m.

“It was a struggle to get the fire out because it got into the rafters,” he said.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP also responded and deemed the fire not suspicious, said B.C. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alex Bérubé.

No cause has been determined.
