TEXADA ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA TEXADA I — British Columbia’s Conservation Officer Service says it’s investigating a report that a grizzly bear on Texada Island, off B.C.’s Sunshine Coast, has been shot and possibly wounded.
The bear has been the focus of much public attention after it began stalking people, harassing livestock and damaging property.
The service says in a statement on social media that the RCMP alerted them that the bear was reported shot and injured by a member of the public.
In June, the service said in a statement that the bear was not a candidate for relocation after being moved twice from Sunshine Coast communities in the past several months.
The service says it’s received complaints about the bear over several months, including that it stalked a couple on a Powell River trail and they only escaped by getting into the water while it paced back and forth on the shore, then tore up one of their jackets before leaving.
The service says its members are on Texada Island to investigate the claim, but is unable to confirm the report and hasn’t located the animal.
